Daily Derailment

A site about music, booze, food, skateboarding, tattoo's, and other shit. Probably nothing you haven't seen before but fuck it. At least now I can bother all of you with it, instead of my poor friends who listen to me talk all day long.

This is an EP from a Northwest Indiana band. This band has so much of a Jesus Lizard influence that David Yow himself was into this band. For those who don’t know, David Yow (vocalist of Jesus Lizard) lived in Crown Point Indiana for a little while. A friend of mine and some of his friends/family made friends with this fella during that time period.

A co-worker turned me on to this band, and he had some personal info on them that may have been biased but it is pretty great all the same. My buddy said these guys had 3 guitarists, 2 bassists, a vocalist, and 1 drummer. This band has a semi chaotic approach while still being completely in sync. The drummer of this band is fucking UNREAL. His drumming stands out, while being put up against 3 guitarists and 2 bassists working together to make this thing rock, but he is just destroying it.

The lyrics are goofy and relate a lot to what is/(was) going on in the punk/bar punk scene back in 2000, but the vocals are so crazy and weird that it doesn’t even matter what he’s talking about. If you have any questions about what this dude is talking about, send me a message and i’ll try to pass along what I was told about these songs. I’ve been drinking old grand dad 100 proof, so if this is rambly, I apologize

Absent

I’ve been without internet the last few days and am currently loitering at bridgeport coffee “borrowing” their internet. Uverse is already making my friendship with ATT more complicated than it already is.

No Moderation was sort of a success I suppose. We blew out a speaker which was kind of a bummer, but was also a testimony to how rad it is that they let us do this thing at their place. Every time I think we are playing the music “too loud”, Ed the bar manager comes over and tells me to turn the volume up. A decent amount of people showed up considering how many conflicting things were going on that night. We also snagged interest in 2 random skins who seen our fliers.

3 Floyds is doing a beer release tonight for Amon Amarth at Bottom Lounge. I am pretty excited for this. I can’t believe I found a job working for a beer company that supports heavy metal, tattoos, and general evil, instead of being a bunch of frisbee throwing hippies. Now if I can just convince them to start making/selling whiskey I can officially throw the rest of my life away for good.

Also, a friend of mine and participant in the suburban punk scene Rich Sheppard passed away Monday night, April 11th. He was also a co-worker of mine at 3 Floyds. I don’t know if it’s tacky of me to write about this here but, I don’t have a diary so if you don’t want to read about this, than skip on to the next/last post. He was a great kid. 20 years old and didn’t give a fuck what people thought about the way he lived. The majority of our kitchen staff are kids that have little to no kitchen experience and especially no experience on the level of food we serve there and at the pace we serve at. While some of the other staff goofed off, Rich was constantly moving and staying busy. He was a hard worker with a good ethic. He loved to sit and bullshit with me about music/shows/the scene/cooking/etc, he would constantly be on the pivot because he took work seriously. The same kid who never stopped working was the same kid who got a tattoo of bear wearing a shark as pants with rainbow suspenders. Also, the same kid who let his friends brand his ass with a scolding hot clothes hanger cuz it was funny. He was excited to 21 and come visit our DJ night and participate in the next part of his life that was awaiting him. I know I am going to miss him along with a great deal of other people. He was loved very much at work and I am %100 sure he had a large amount of friends.

RIP RICH SHEPPARD

No Moderation

Steve Kane and I will be doing our 3rd DJ set NO MODERATION this Saturday night (4/9/11). This is a ton of fun and the great people at Maria’s Community Bar have been kind enough to give us Saturday nights. The bar is fantastic and the staff is friendly. They are huge supporters of the art/music community alongside the indie culture and just all in all “keepin it real”. I love these people and I hope to introduce a new audience of people to what they have going on over there.

The music ranges from modern/classic hardcore punk all the way to pop punk, oi to garage. Steve and I share common interests in music so our split doesn’t stray to far in one way or another and flows nearly seamlessly. Please come out and support our night and their bar. Bring some friends.

Needles - Twisted Vision

twisted visiion

This EP is unbelievably ripping. Music is fast and Martin Crudos is on vocals, sounding more pissed than ever. Members of Look Back and Laugh also play in this band. Bryan from Chronic Seizure had mentioned how much he liked this 7”. Trusting his taste, I picked it up. Great decision. 6 songs just over 6 minutes.

The Mans - High

image

The Mans are about as stripped down as a band could get. 2 members and lo-fi as shit. This EP is catchy as hell. I picked up a split these guys did because it was done with Cococoma and I love that band. The Mans side might not have been the most incredible thing I’ve ever heard but it was interesting enough to make me want to pick this one up to further explore what these guys are doing. I prefer this EP to the split, not to say the split isn’t good. Check this shit out. They are from Lafayette Indiana and they put this out on Yakisakana Records (some French dude’s label I guess).

Carbonas

Frothing at the Mouth

So this will be my first upload. It is the “Frothing at the Mouth” EP from Carbonas. This thing totally rips. These guys played Chicago a couple years back and it was the same night as some other important show… maybe it was either the Expired Youth final show, or Punch In The Face’s last Chicago set but I opted to go to whatever show wasn’t Carbonas. I’m sure I enjoyed the show I attended, but there is a huge part of me that regrets not going to see these garage rock maniacs. This is my favorite EP that they have done. I hope you enjoy it. I plan on upping the rest of their 7” collection in the course of the month. Get into it!

Oh, and I personally ripped all of the EP’s that I am posting so everything is recorded at 320kbps using a fantastic grado cartridge for premium quality sound.

My First Post

I have thought about doing a blog/tumblr for a while now. I have some time on my hands today while I’m ripping some music. So what better time to start than now?

This will probably feature a collection of things that I enjoy. All the things that stop me from having “daily derailments”.

If you like punk/hardcore, beer/cocktails, food, skateboarding, and the like… You should like what I got going on here.

I plan to give links to records that I enjoy, updates on the punk rock music night I host with my good friend Steve Kane and the people at Maria’s Community Bar and Packaged Goods. Plus a bunch of other goodies.

Enjoy!
